It was quite an event in the heart of the Delta on the last weekend of October 2014 at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. The fledging Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum organized a program of speakers to talk about the rich heritage of the Chinese grocery stores and the families that ran them across many towns in the Delta. Over 250 people attended, many who grew up in the Delta but now lived far away but held a strong emotional bond to the region. It was exciting to be invited to speak at the event and to meet many people in person that I had corresponded with by e mail or telephone. It was an amazing experience for the participants, many who had not been back for decades and now had the opportunity to renew old acquaintances from as many as 50 years ago and to make new friends.
